BROKEN OPAL RING JOBThese pictures show a customer's broken opal ring. A blue plastic storage container lid is included in the picture as a color standard. ![]() ![]() The opal is a nice black opal with major colors of blue and green in a harlequin pattern. The fuzziness in the center of the stone is a large chip. The jagged line extending from both sides of the chip to the edges of the stone is a major break. ![]() ![]() The back side of the opal has a lot of glue obscuring much of the stone. Enough of it shows that by examining it with an optivisor we can see the break on the back side of the stone. Also, the opal shows a red color in backlighting. This is helpful to know when looking for a replacement stone. Unfortunately, this stone is broken into two parts and cannot be used in this ring. Therefore, this opal will be removed and a replacement set in the ring. The two pieces of this opal will probably be recut, retaining as much of the stone as possible, to put into other jewelry pieces. REPLACEMENT STONESThese pictures show possible replacements for the stone. None of these stones are exactly the dimensions of the original stone. After the customer chooses which stone to use, we will recut the stone to fit the mounting, or the jeweler can alter the ring mounting to fit the stone. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Right now the jeweler is working with his customer to decide which stone to use. Nothing will be done to the ring until a replacement is purchased. In the meantime, for questions or comments on anything else, please |
