Blue Mason County Topaz. Lone Star Cut. Round. This is a very quick picture of three stones in the Blue Mason County color. The smallest is a 7.33 mm stone weighing 1.96 carats with a distinctly sky blue color. The middle stone measures 8.13 mm and weighs 2.72 carats. Color is pale blue body with the star showing medium to light blue. The largest stone measures 9 mm, weighs 3.81 carats, and has a body color of very pale blue and star of pale blue. All three stones are $180.00 per carat. Please contact us for availability. |
Mason County Topaz. Lone Star Cut. Round. Official gemstone and official gemstone cut of the State of Texas. These stones are usually white to very, very light blue and, rarely, sky blue in color. The lone star is very impressive when this material has a very crystalline appearance. A very unique and desirable stone. |
Natural Blue Topaz. Lone Star. 23 mm x 16.66 mm. The pale blue color of this stone is the natural color. It has not been heat treated to enhance the color. The very large size gives the stone enough body to show the color well. And the lone star in this size makes a BIG impression. The Lone Star cut in a stone of this size absolutely requires precise meets of facet edges and corners, flat faces with no waves or dips and an excellent polish. There are natural pinpoint inclusions near the culette that show as bright points. 54.60 carats. lssk5460. $2730.00 |
Swiss Blue Topaz. Lone Star. 7.5mm x 5.5mm deep Matched Pair of Lone Star cut topaz. A nice medium blue color that shows the cut very well. Official gemstone cut of the State of Texas. 4.14 carats total weight. lstppr |
Dark Blue Topaz. Lone Star Cut. Matched Pair. A London blue color that is still light enough to show the star well. Official gemstone cut of the State of Texas. Available by special orde. lsswpr |
Sky Blue Topaz. Lone Star Cut. Round. Official gemstone cut of the State of Texas in light to medium blue topaz. Star shows strongly through the pentagon shaped table. This is a very impressive stone. The 3D star jumps out of the table in this lighter color. Available in all sizes. Example sizes with approximate carat weights are: 16 mm diameter - 18 carats; 12 mm diameter - 8.50 carats; 9 mm diameter - 3.75 carats; 8mm diameter and smaller are available for a minimum price. |
Swiss Blue Topaz. Lone Star Cut. Round. Official gemstone cut of the State of Texas in medium bright blue topaz. This color has turquoise tones and has been a favorite color because of it is a strong, bright color. The star shows very well with all its 3D effect. Available in all sizes. |
Super Blue Topaz. Lone Star Cut. Round. Official gemstone cut of the State of Texas. This color is darker and bluer than the Swiss Blue color. Although the star is less prominent in the darker stone, it is quite noticeable. That is a small trade-off for the rich, gorgeous color. |
Golden Citrine. Lone Star Cut. Round. 9 mm. Citrine is the second most popular stone species, after topaz, for the lone star cut. This golden color still shows the star well. The setting for it may need to be open below the girdle to allow some light to enter from the back. 2.57 carats. lscit257. Email or call for price and availability on other sizes. |
Amethyst. Lone Star Cut. Round. Available in several sizes. This medium shade of amethyst shows the star very well. When the stone is turned the star changes from dark to light giving the stone several looks in the amethyst tones. This particular stone is 7.37 carats. amels2. Email or call for price and availability on other sizes. |
Sky Blue Topaz. Lone Star Cut. EMERALD CUT SQUARE. 10.68 mm x 10.24 mm x 9.96 mm deep. Here is the lone star cut in an equal-sided emerald cut or clipped-corner square. We developed this design keeping the official lone star cut in the bottom of the stone, but shaping the top into the square with clipped corners. A very unusual stone, very eye-catching, truly unique. Diagonal measurement is about 12mm. The depth is typical for a 12mm diameter round, but should be considered when designing your setting since it is a lot deeper than native cut square stones. Email or call for price and availability on other sizes. 9.16 carats. tplssq. $549.60. |
Sky Blue Topaz. Lone Star Cut in Fancy Triangle. 12.80 mm x 10.20 mm x 9.19 mm deep. Here the lone star has been cut into a triangular shaped stone. The star is very visible through the large table and the extra space between the star and the edges add an interesting element that is unattainable in the official round cut. This piece would make a great pendant.6.47 carats. lstr647 $388.20. |
Sky Blue Topaz. Lone Star Cut. TRIANGLE. Another unusual cut we've developed. Look carefully at the lone star -- behind the main star is a second star that is reversed. The effect is fantastic. The sparkle and liveliness is quite remarkable. It reminds me of dancing ice crystals. The large flat table showcases every bit of that life. Anyone will like this stone, even those with no interest in the five-pointed star. It's that good. 7.99 carats. tpstri $479.40. |
Lone Star Cut Topaz. Pear Shape. 10 mm x 8 mm. 5.5 ct. The Lone Star Cut into a pear shape. In order to place the star in this shape stone, the star must be cut at shallower angles than the official Lone Cut resulting in less reflective contrast within the star. The star is well-defined and looks really good. The drop/pear-shape in this size is perfect for pendant or ring. Available only on special order. Contact us to order this shape stone. 5.5 ct. lsps1.jpg. $352.00. |
See note below regarding perspective distortion. Golden Lab Grown Citrine. Lone Star in Emerald Cut shape. This is a Very large stone that was cut as a special order for a customer. The lone star was cut so it would be seen to fit inside the table as viewed from above. Thus, the rest of the stone becomes a rich, golden, multi-faceted frame for the star. An impressive stone. Cut to the size you request - special order only. You determine the size and material. Note: The image was taken from a slightly off-center position which caused a distortion in the perspective. The top and bottom are actually parallel. Email or call for price and availability on other sizes. 37.65 carats. citst3765. $2259.00. |
Topaz. Mason County. White. Lone Star Cut Round White Mason County topaz shown with citrine rounds that could be used as side stones. mstpmult |
Spessartite Garnet. Lone Star Cut. Oval. Yes, we can cut a stone to fit a class ring. This one was custom cut to fit an existing setting. The star shows very well in this material. The setting limited the depth of the stone causing the facet lines between and through the star's arms to be much less prominent. Cut by special order only. lsspes3 |
Natural Texas Blue Topaz Crystal. Crystal is water-worn but still has termination. 4.88 carats. 13.8 mm x 7 mm. |
A Mason County blue topaz side-by-side with a Mason County white topaz. This blue stone is a very good blue for a natural, untreated stone. The picture highlights the few small inclusions, visible as the pinpoint bright spots, that is typical of natural blue topaz. Because natural, Texas blue topaz is so rare, inclusions of this type do not decrease the value of the stone except when they greatly interfer with your ability to see the star. The white topaz is brilliant and has no inclusions. Texas topaz is considered by many experts to be among the world's best and most strikingly beautiful. |
Size Comparison Comparison of Lone Star Cut topaz sizes. The smallest stone in this picture is 5.75 mm in diameter; the second from the largest is 13 mm; largest is 23 mm. An American $0.10 coin (a dime) is shown in front. Inch and millimeter caliper is shown behind the stones. I arranged the stones in a slight semi-cirle to minimize the distortion caused by the close-up lens angle. Sizes and weights of stones in this image are:

Color Comparison Comparison of Lone Star Cut topaz colors. Starting from the left: The first two are Mason County topaz - the leftmost stone is white with the barest blue tint that shows as a single reflection in this picture. The next stone is a light, pale blue color which will look white in some lights. Stones three through six: The rough originated in Brazil and was heat treated in the rough to achieve the different colors of blue. The middle stones (third and fourth) are the light to medium blue, most often call sky blue or Swiss blue. The last two stones (fifth and sixth) are the dark blue usually called London blue. London blue is a beautiful, rich color caused by the density of color in the stone. The contrast between the star and the body is less in this dark color. |

Facts about the Lone Star Cut The Name Named for the state slogan "Texas - The Lone Star State", the Lone Star Cut displays the familiar five-pointed Texas Star of the state seal and is the official State Gemstone Cut of Texas. (House Concurrent Resolution 97 of the Texas Legislature.)
The Cut
The most commonly used material for this cut is blue topaz imported from Brazil and is commonly heat treated to produce a permanent blue color. This also makes a very impressive star. Right now we also have imported light blue topaz that has not been heat treated. Unless otherwise specified, the blue lone star cuts pictured are cut from treated Brazilian material.
Other Material
We can also cut other "star" cuts inspired by the Lone Star cut, such as the triple star, double star, and outline star, on special order. Contact us for price quote.
